The Difference Between Semi-Permanent And Permanent Hair Colour

When you’re looking for a change, nothing does the trick quite like a new hair colour. There are so many options available to anyone looking to tint their tresses, but there are two main types of colour options available: permanent hair colour and semi-permanent hair colour. Is there a difference? What should you pick? At Suki Hair, we have expert stylists on staff who are happy to share all there is to know about hair colour.

Is there a big difference between the two? Yes, there is. Semi-permanent colours are artificial colours designed to wash out your hair. Generally, they will last between four to eight weeks, though each product differs. The reason semi-permanent hair colours wash out is that they don’t contain any chemicals such as ammonia or peroxide.

Since the hair colour doesn’t penetrate the cuticle and change the structure of the hair, it will not last as long as permanent colour. Semi-permanent colour is lower maintenance and less of a commitment than permanent colour. Examples of semi-permanent hair colours are glazes and glosses. Since semi-permanent colours last far less than permanent colours, it would not be the best choice if you plan to make drastic changes. It also does not allow for much lightening or darkening.

As the name suggests, permanent hair colour does not wash out and will need to either be grown out of the hair over time or removed with bleach or a colour remover. The difference comes in due to the nature of how the colour reacts with the hair the chemical processing or oxidation.

In addition to opening the cuticle, ammonia and hydrogen peroxide interact with melanin and keratin (which control colour and texture) and change the structure, thus allowing the colour to be deposited. Permanent hair colour can lighten your hair or darken it. It often needs a root touch-up every four to six weeks since dark roots are evident as your hair grows out, especially if hydrogen peroxide was used for substantial lightening. Permanent colour can completely cover greys but requires constant upkeep.
